Fundamental change is needed at all levels of government to include small cities and towns that are taking the taxpayers for a ride trying to realize 'their vision" for growth.
The federal government is setting a poor example to follow by bailing out failing banks, mortgage companies and investment/insurance companies.
A case in point is Junction City, KS Mayor and City Commission pushing for Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID) to be used for an area that is over built and has over 400 homes on the market, not counting the many homes in foreclosure.
The city is near the statutory debt limit, in order to take General Obligation Bonds and/or Temporary Bonds that DO NOT count towards the debt limit, the city commission is trying to push the RHID on the taxpayers so infrastructure built by developers for 6000+ homes can be paid for. With other words the city is bailing out developers that cannot sell homes or building lots because the demand is not there.
The city's Financial Plan clearly states that in order to repay Bonds and Loans the City Commission is OBLIGATED to raise mill levies to ensure repayment.
Property tax valuation has increased 70% over the past three years, in a declining housing market no less! This year alone, in addition to a 15.8% increase in property valuation, the mill levy has been raised as well to cover the already outstanding Bonds and Loans. And the Mayor and City Commission is still looking to increase the debt via RHID, which will have to be paid for by the taxpayers.
Watching the news and seeing what is happening on the Federal level, the total disregard for the taxpayers money and the out of control spending does not surprise me.
Great idea! lets getthe ideas flowing and send a message to the folks in Washington that "...we the people..." was written for a reason. Politicians need to lead or get out of the way and they need to be reminded that "WE" can and will remove them.
I feel I am the only one that is not blind ! When we STOP sending money to the middle east for oil and make a top priority to use our own recources THEN and only then will things get back on track. We are being raped financially by illegal immigrants, and raked over the coals by muslims that are trying to change our laws. as to the muslims,if they do not want to pray on their own time , go the h*ll back where you came from we do not need or want you jihadists here ! We need to take the constitution back where it was originally, and scrape off all the garbage it has accumalated over the years ! I truely beleive that we need to go after the CEO's of these large investment banks, seize their assets paying the stock holder and investments back. I beleive and correct me if I am wrong, but one CEO's salary was $30MM, that's 1/3 of the AIG bailout. I am a Mechanical Engineer and work for a Cement mfg in the mid-west. If I messed up a multi-milion dollar project and milked the company, the company would not give me a big severence package and let me walk.
These CEO are hired based on their expertiese, they should receive a base salary and then a bonus based on the performance of the company, investments and so on.
I would like to know how many of the mortage loan officiers were working on comission and pushed the sub-prime mortages to home buyers just to make a buck. There's a lot of greed out there and the justice department should search these people out and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.
Being in the Cement industry, we are the first to see a rise and decline in the economy, based on construdtion. Right now it's a little slow and sales have leveled off and we're projecting an steady increase next year. With McCain and a Republician congress the economy take off big time.

1. One of the major problems, in my opinion, is that government service has turned into a retirement program for becomming rich. Can anyone tell me, how Obama, who was a community organizer, a state legislator and a member of the senate (most of the time which has been spent campaigning) has become a millionaire? We really need to make public service a one term process to reduce the temptation to make it a career of power and wealth. But how can we get the legislature to approve this?
2. Why is it that government officials are not held personally responsibile? For example, Fredie Mack and Fannie Mae and the bank debacile had oversight committees and they didn't do one thing to blow the whistle or stop the the failures? In addition, those individuals responsible made outlandish profits and they get to walk away free and all the time blaming someone else? And the heads of the legistlative branches say they had nothing to do with this? Well, the legistlative branch certainly should have been legislating. The buck should have stopped there! Our legislative leaders should be drummed out of the USA (but they should really be tried for treason).
3. Why is that the nation has made it clear that we need to drill now, drill here wherever we have oil resources (on shore and offshore) yet our congressional leaders mock us by ignoring us? Even more then ignoring us, they laugh at us like this is their country and they are the ones running it? Isn't this the land of the people, by the people and for the people?
4. Why is it that when we are at war against terroism, our congressional leaders do all they can to insure defeat of our nation? The people who have taken an oath to protect and defend this country have mocked it. They are guilty of treason and should be punished accordingly. Have you heard of anyone being accused of treason lately? Hardley!
SUGGESTION: All senators and congressmen should be required to set up a Blind Trust, in the same manner as the President and Vice President, when they take office. All investments other than a personal residence should be required to be handled by the trustee of the blind trust during their term of office.
That way, they will not be able to have conflicts of interest when voting on issues that may affect their personal investments because they will not have direct knowledge of what their personal investments are.
It is atrocious to have elected representatives go to Washington and in a period of just a few years have their net worth increase by millions of dollars when their salary is under $200,000 per year! Using the blind trust will help keep them honest and voting in the country's best interest in stead of their own [as Nancy Pelosi did recently with her investment in T Boone Pickens new wind power company - high oil prices will benefit her investment so there is no motivation for her to lower oil prices as it will cause her stock in Pickens' company to fall].
The American people have given up their rights and are continually victimized by a greedy and powerful elite. United, with one voice we can regain what has been lost. Thank you for your efforts. You can count on my support.

I truly trust you and hopefully you and your Solution participants can pull this country out of the black hole we are falling through. I am one of the American's that lost my house not due to zero money down or falsifying income, but to a smooth talking mortgage broker. I lost all of my 401K that I worked all my life for and am now living with my Daughter and Grandsons who I am very grateful they have taken me in with them. I believe that the mortgage companies, banks, and CEO's of the failed companies should not be bailed out for poor management. I lost mine for poor choices and they should loose theirs. The tax payer should not, should not pay for bad decisions and management skills. Barney Frank, Cox, and all of the other Washington bureaucrats all should be taken out of Washington.
I wish you had run for President, but I will not do what I did before and that was wasting my vote on Ross Perot which helped Clinton into the white house. In four years maybe?

The fundamentals of America may still appear to be healthy to you, but they are quickly failing. All you have to do is ask those who make their living on tourism or the trucking industry. It won't take long to put us under if things don't change FAST. I am putting my trust in those that may still be trustworthy in our government to get off their rear-ends and do what they should have gone into office to do - make this Country strong and work for the PEOPLE!
We have allowed the previous administrations to sell us out to other countries while our Country's dollar becomes less and less stable. I hope we, the people, don't put up with this any more and make our government officials accountable!
I'm hoping that the work you are doing here will pay off soon.

You know, "once upon a time" we had laws preventing huge corporate mergers because they knocked competition out of the marketplace, (aren't these laws still on the books?!) ... and yet the government has turned a blind eye to this over recent years, with merger after mega-merger! Now many of these increasingly larger corporate entities are falling due to corruption and greed in their practices...unchecked because they are "king of the hill" and there is little or no competition!
What is wrong with this picture?
How exactly is bailing out the banks going to help our economy? Is this how they will learn not to be greedy and make loans for people who clearly do not deserve them?
And the final catch-22 ... who is going to "bail out" American citizens like us who work hard and can't meet their obligations or qualify for refinancing or even debt consolidation loans...?! Certainly not the banks who may be getting help now from us!

How about we cut back on the number of flag officers we have in the military, so about 1/3 of them are not needed. Go back to the old days when company commanders were older than most of their soldiers. Retiring as a Major(04) was okay and not a slam on the retiree.

Cut back the salaries of all federal elected officials by 10%. Reduce the for life pay check of one term reps to 3% of their regular salaries. Reduce the so called retirement pay for former presidents to $75,00 per year, no sec'y and office expenises. Security Servicer for 5 years after leaving office. Let's remember they ran for and were elected to public office. Why should we give them a free ride for the rest of their lives? Require that they pay into Social Security just like ther rest of us middle class folks are required to do, again, why should we give them a free ride? Since it is a federal service, it should be set up just like the military, if they serve 20 years, they receive 50% of their basic pay, if they serve 30 or more years then they get 75% of their base pay. And at the age of 65, they lose all federal medical benefits except for Medicare and medicade, again, no more free rides.
Require every appointed official to pay into health coverage, like they do in the civilian world.
STOP sending our dollars to countries that are no longer friendly to us and our cause.
BRING BACK "MADE WITH PRIDE IN THE USA"!
If Saudi Araba wants our corn then charge them the going price for a barrel of oil for a bushel of corn.
We are not the 9-1-1 for the rest of the world. If another country calls for our help, let them pay for our services.

The American people helping banks out that basically gave loans out to people that could not afford them is just not right. I'll be attending on Dish Network on September 27th! I find it ironic that Barack Obama was against domestic drillijng, but now he's for it. Then he was against domestic Natural gas production and now he's for it sort of. Then Freedie Mac and Fannie Mae were both agencies formed by the Democratic party and had CEO's appointed to run them who are Democrats and now Joe Biden says that we should all be more patriotic and pay more in taxes while these same CEO's get multi million dollar severance packages they ruined the agencies they were supposed to run and make profitable????

As in 1994 as well as 2008 the sentiment of this nation and myself is that the word from Washington reported by the media in general is suspect at best. Change happened then and will happen this November. The difference in our choice of the two approaches is clearly evident but not portrayed CLEARLY in the broadcast available to the general electorate. It is sharply divided alone party lines and more importantly slanted toward a global view rather than a national/home view.
The reason Gov. Sarah Palin is so vastly popular with all political views is due to her transparency that is reported from her home town and politics of the state of Alaska where she lives and grew up. The people that know her best as well as those that are politically adverse are saying the same thing: "What you see is what you get"!
Those that want to lead need to come back to this primary principle of INTEGRTY in what you SAY and DO! CHARACTER in fulfilling your OBJECTIVES!

Mr. Gingrich, I too have to say I look forward to the day we can vote for your as President. When people go on about how wonderful Clinton was, my argument has always been it was not Clinton, it was the Contract with America that Newt Gingrich created that really touched the spirit of the American people and also got a Conservative majority in the House that finally got some substantive programs passed that were for the good of America, not just deciding on class uniforms for schools (that's about the only proposal I remember Clinton putting thru!).
As to the current screw up of our Congress, I just don't want Congressional heads on the chopping block, I want us to pick their pockets as they pick ours! Just voting them out does not affect them as they affect us in our pocketbooks and families. I want to take their money (as Joe Biden says he and Obama will do - take money from others to give to others) and use it to put a severe dent in this bailout that had to be done because of their mismanagement and greedy profiteering! The CEO's and investment bankers who created this mess as a result of their own greed should have to pay for the situation they produced. It is not my responsibility --as a taxpayer--to have to work the rest of my life to and pay more taxes to bail out the Wall Street rapists. Aren't they the ones who proclaimed that the market will correct itself? -- So let it be.
I think we should be allowed to vote nationwide and let the people decide if they want to pay the taxes to bail out these greedy company leaders who will walk away unscathed while pocketing their fortunes from their severance packages. The BASICS of America have never really been robust due to some unfortunate errors made by our Founding Fathers in our Constitution. But America has been very seriously ill for over a hundred years and can only become healthy when the government gets out of the economy and begins to take seriously it proper job of protecting our individual rights, viz: the right to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness; instead of constantly violating them.
Lassiez-faire capitalism is a corollary of individual rights. When the government kills businesses by Anti-trust and "fair" competition laws it also kills individual freedom by narrowing or eliminating alternatives. When government decrees that the airways are public property, not private property, we get censorship, e.g., (The FCC and McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Act). When the government disavows the gold standard and opts for fiat paper, inflation/deflation follows and our country is looted by its supposed protectors. The interferences of government in the economy are disastrous to it: witness the current mortage loan mess created by the government.

I am totally with you Mr. Speaker...Good money should not be thrown in after bad....The tax paying citizens should not be shouldering errors of the Housing meltdown, which was a result of "soft" loans by mortgage financial institutions. Why don't we spend that money on ENERGY INITIATIVES which would wean the United States from forein oil. For as long as we remain dependent on "non-friendly" countries to supply us with oil, we as a nation limits our options, for fear of offending these people...So madmen like Hugo Chavez openly taunt us...Iran's president insult us....We are not even sure of who are our true allies are anymore...We have a presidential candidate who had been friends with people who hate America (e.g. Ayers and Wright)....Why dont we give that money to the people instead of bailing out these financial institutions..I can picture a bubble coming out from the bottom of a pond, and once it reaches the surface it bursts and it is actually nothing but air. The bailout is actually trying to fill that bubble which is an imaginary value, propped up by the financial institutions. And now it is bursting and everyone finds out it is nothing. But our leaders are trying to fill in that bubble. Why dont we spend it on Energy and instead prop up the auto industry which has still real value. Manufacturing still has true value. And maybe we should go back and buy American once again.
